Anyone who is currently dealing with the topic of buying a car will feel that new car prices are rising sharply.

The ADAC is now providing the numbers.

A liter of super 2.19 euros, half a pound of butter 2.29 euros, and it's better not to think about the next gas bill at all: wherever you look, prices are skyrocketing.

Anyone who doesn't happen to be a Lufthansa pilot has little chance of somehow compensating for inflation.

Especially not if he has to buy a new, or at least a good used car.

The second-hand supply is scarce and expensive, and for new cars (which are hardly available anyway) the manufacturers have been turning the price screw for some time.

But now inflation in new cars has reached a new dimension.

"Are new cars unaffordable?" asks the ADAC, alarmed.

The auto club has calculated that cars have become more expensive by up to 44 percent in the past five years.

A notable increase, especially given that passenger car models are typically on the market for seven years before a more modern successor arrives.

More horsepower for a lot more euros: a VW Golf now costs at least just under 30,000 euros.

Especially in recent times, some extreme examples have come to light.

According to ADAC, a VW Golf with 90 hp was available for 20,700 euros just a year ago.

This basic model has now been replaced by a version with 130 hp - for 29,560 euros.

For almost 9,000 euros more you get more engine power, but if you don't value the extra horsepower, you don't get much out of it.

The competition doesn't look much better either.

While last year a 100 hp Fiat Tipo was available from 17,490 euros, now only the 130 hp hybrid version is available for a basic price of 28,490 euros: an increase of 11,000 euros.

A similar picture in the small car class of the Italian Stellantis brand: The (now fully electric) Fiat 500 is still available in the previous version with a combustion engine, but only as a hybrid - which means that the price of 13,000 (2020) is up 16,500 euros (2022) shot up.

The situation is similar with the off-road brand Jeep, where the Wrangler is only available as a plug-in version and has mutated into a luxury car at 80,000 euros.

VW Golf suddenly 9,000 euros more expensive - and the Ford Mustang Mach-E almost 10,000 euros

In the case of electric cars, the ADAC suspects that manufacturers are increasingly adding the environmental bonus to the price.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E was around 10,000 euros more expensive within a year: With practically the same equipment, it now costs 56,500 euros instead of 46,900 euros.

In practice, the fact that car dealers hardly grant any discounts, as was common until recently, has a price-driving effect - no wonder: Due to the high demand, there are hardly any car models that are difficult to sell.
