Despite the bright sunshine in the Edinburgh sky, a veil of sadness and uncertainty shrouds the approaches to Holyrood Palace.
Throughout the weekend, an uninterrupted stream of anonymous people marched past the gates that surround the official residence of British sovereigns in Scotland.
Residents of the capital and the surrounding area, little girls with eyes reddened by tears, veterans of the British Army whose voices suddenly pale with emotion... They lined up to drop off their brightly colored bouquets, to share their memories of this so long reign and, at times, vent their fears for the future.
Most point out that they have never known a ruler other than Elizabeth, and some fear that her disappearance will weaken the kingdom.

Aged 73, this short, sharp-eyed woman is a former employee of Holyrood.
