The poor and initially problematic enforcement towards cyclists and electric scooters is often joined by another aspect, which is the lack of awareness, or the misconception that the traffic laws that apply to these vehicles are more flexible than normal vehicles.

Which leads to a phenomenon in which scooter riders see them as a solution not only to parking problems and traffic jams, but allow themselves to get on the vehicle even after an alcoholic drink, again out of ignorance or just recklessness.

An attempt to minimize, although not completely prevent, this phenomenon comes from the cooperative scooter company TIER, which is launching a new component in its application (at this stage only for owners of the iOS operating system).

This is a type of drunkenness test that aims to give the rider an indication of his condition and ability to ride.

How It Works?

Throughout the weekend, between the hours of 11:00 p.m. on Thursday and 4:00 a.m., each user will receive a visual test in which they will be asked to tilt the mobile phone according to the angle indicated on the screen several times within a specified period of time.

Failure to meet the task will cause the application to alert the user that he is not fit to ride and direct him to another transportation alternative such as a taxi, bus or train (the last two are not relevant on Friday).

"The safety of our scooter riders and other road users is always a top priority at TIER," said Rudy Daniel, the company's CEO in Israel, "with the help of working with behavioral analysts, the new features in our drunkenness test will add another layer of support to rider safety."

but there is a problem.

The person behind the development of the component is the Innovationbubble company from London, which is not a research or safety body, but specializes in consulting and building systems to improve the user experience and the engagement of customers with companies and organizations.

And this is what leads to the less successful aspect of the story: with all the good will, initiative and intention - in practice it is not possible to prevent the renter from boarding the vessel.

Beyond the simple fact that there is really no way to verify that the rider is the one who performed the test, even if he clearly fails the test, he is not denied the opportunity to travel, or disables for a certain period of time the possibility to rent the vehicle and at the end of it take a second test.

In fact, apart from a "recommendation" to turn to another means of transportation, according to the company there is currently no way to prevent him from renting the scooter, but even there they say that this is a first step and there will be an examination of the possibility of improving this service in the future.
