While throughout the United Kingdom the main concern is the change of government and the end of an era, in the Windsor family, in recent days, an accompanying drama has been unfolding around another question: what will become of the corgi dogs that were so beloved by the Queen and became over the years one of her hallmarks?
A source close to the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, told CNN yesterday that the Duke and Duchess Sarah Ferguson (known as Fergie) will adopt the dogs into their arms.
Although the duke and duchess are no longer married, the two have grown closer over the past few years, among other things in light of Andrew's legal entanglements surrounding the sexual assaults he allegedly committed as part of the Jeffrey Epstein case (the lawsuit against the prince finally ended in a plea agreement in which he paid a huge amount to charity).
The prince and his ex-wife live in the Windsor Castle complex, so the dogs will probably continue to enjoy the royal treatment they were used to all the years with the British sovereign until her death last Thursday.
Especially remembered is the corgi that starred alongside the Queen in the 2012 Olympics video, along with Daniel Craig as James Bond.
The source told CNN that Duchess Fergie and the late Queen bonded over their shared love of dogs and horse riding.
Even after the divorce from Andrew, Fergie and the Queen kept in touch to the extent that the Duchess continued to take the dogs for walks, the source said.
The Queen had four corgis when she died, and they will now pass to Prince Andrew and his ex-wife.
She had two other mixed dogs, and it is not clear what will happen to them.
