One person was killed and 40 others injured when a dam wall collapsed in a diamond mine and caused homes and cars to be washed away in South Africa.
"The disaster occurred in the town of Jagersfontein, and dozens of residents were evacuated to nearby farms," Reuters news agency quoted local authorities in the Free State region as saying in a statement, adding that one body was recovered, while 40 people were taken to hospitals for treatment.
The statement indicated that search and rescue efforts are continuing in the vicinity of the abandoned diamond mine.
In turn, the office of the Prime Minister of the Territory said that "a detailed report will be issued on the circumstances surrounding the incident as soon as it is completed."
For its part, the state-owned energy company Eskom said in a separate statement that it had "lost a large amount of electricity supply in the area after its (Retcoil) station was submerged in mud," noting that it was difficult to determine the extent of the damage.
The water damaged cell phone towers, as well as communication lines, drinking water and some roads.
