Russian revenge? Severe disruptions in the electricity supply in Ukraine following an attack on critical infrastructure Israel today

2022-09-11T18:31:48.587Z

The escalation came a day after the significant gains made by the Ukrainian forces in the east of the country • Russian Telegram channels linked the power outages to the launch of missiles from Russian ships in the Caspian Sea

A day after the reports of the significant progress of Ukrainian forces to recapture parts of the eastern part of the country, the Ukrainian authorities reported this evening (Sunday) about serious disruptions in the electricity supply in five districts: Kharkiv, Poltava, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Poltava.

The disruptions began after the bomb that caused a major fire in critical infrastructure facilities in Kharkiv province.

Disruptions in the water supply were also reported in the district.

Russian Telegram channels linked the power outages to the launch of missiles from Russian ships in the Caspian Sea.

Air defense systems in Ukraine worked to intercept the missiles, but some seem to have reached their targets.

A few weeks ago, the US committed to providing Ukraine with advanced NASAMS systems, which even protect the White House, but these are not expected to arrive before 2024.

As mentioned, the Russian attack comes a day after Ukraine announced the recapture of large parts of the eastern part of the country, mainly in the Kharkiv region.

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, this is an area of about 3,000 km that has now returned to the hands of the Ukrainian forces.

At the same time, the dangerous situation continues at the largest power plant in Europe, Zaporizhia, which is on the frontline of the fighting and under Russian control.

On Sunday, Energatom, the Ukrainian Atomic Energy Agency, announced that it had halted operations at the complex - and effectively shut down the last reactor in operation (reactor 6) - because the shelling destroyed the connection to the station's external power source.

A short time later, the International Atomic Energy Agency - which recently sent a delegation of inspectors to the complex that recommended the creation of a "safety zone" around the station - said that the station had been reconnected to its external power supply, which was designed to ensure a controlled temperature of the nuclear reactors and prevent them from tarnishing.

However, it is unclear whether this will lead to restarting the reactors.
