The last running reactor unit in the embattled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has been shut down for safety reasons.

But the risk remains high.

Zaporizhia – In the Ukraine conflict that has degenerated into war, the situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant continues to deteriorate.

According to Ukrainian information, the nuclear power plant has now been completely disconnected from the power grid and shut down, reports the

.

"It was decided to put reactor block number six in the safest state - the cold state," announced the Ukrainian nuclear agency Energoatom on Sunday (September 11) on its Telegram channel.

During the Ukraine war, the nuclear power plant has been under fire for weeks.

Russia and Ukraine blame each other for the escalation of the situation around the nuclear facility and accuse the other side of risking a nuclear catastrophe.

News in the Ukraine war: The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is being shut down - the situation remains risky

According to Energoatom, the nuclear power plant has been operating in "island mode" for the last three days, which means that it only produces electricity for its own supply, because all lines of connection to the Ukrainian power grid have been interrupted by the shelling.

A week ago, the last remaining main power line was interrupted, only a reserve line continued to supply electricity, the observing International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Saturday (September 3rd, 2022).

This greatly increased the risk of exposure to radiation.

On Saturday evening (September 10th) a line to the power grid was restored.

As a result, it was decided to supply the nuclear power plant via this line and to shut down the last functioning reactor block and cool it down to a safe cold state.

However, the risk of further damage to the power line remains high, reports Energoatom.

In an emergency, the cooling can be operated with diesel generators, but this is only possible for a limited time due to the technological resources and the amount of fuel available, reports

Already in August there was an emergency shutdown of the power plant.

This was preceded by a shelling of the plant, for which both warring parties blame each other.
