Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi will visit Qatar on Tuesday (September 12) for the first time since the reestablishment in 2021 of diplomatic relations between the two countries after four years of rupture, announced the rich small gas country of the Gulf.

Mr Sissi will be received by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the palace said on Twitter.

According to the Qatari news agency QNA, this visit “

establishes a new era in the relations between Doha and Cairo, making them evolve into a fruitful partnership

”.

"

Qataro-Egyptian relations are experiencing a phase of active communication and mutual visits intended to strengthen (them)

," QNA added on Twitter on Monday.

The Emir of Qatar went to Egypt at the end of June, for his first visit to Cairo since the resumption of relations between the two countries.

The two leaders then discussed, according to the Egyptian presidency, the "

strengthening of ties in the fields of energy and agriculture

" as well as "

the deepening of cooperation in the field of commercial exchanges and in particular concerning investment flows from Qatar to Egypt

”.

Consequences of the war in Ukraine

Egypt, the most populous of the Arab countries and the world's largest importer of wheat - mainly from Russia and Ukraine - is suffering from the consequences of the conflict that began in February.

Inflation reached 15%, driven by a rise in food prices reaching up to 66% and reducing household purchasing power.

Qatar announced at the end of March that it would invest 4.5 billion euros in Egypt, while the Qatari hydrocarbon giant QatarEnergy signed an agreement with the American ExxonMobil to acquire a "

40% stake in an offshore exploration block of Egypt

”.

In 2017, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates cut ties with Doha, accusing it of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and getting closer to Iran - accusations Qatar denies.

The diplomatic and economic blockade imposed on the small gas emirate in the Gulf was lifted in January 2021.
