A cruise vacation is a wonderful idea.

Sometimes going to the sea for a few hours can help you clear your head and fill your energy reserves.

With your spouse or children, a trip to the water is definitely a great way to get out of the routine.

For many, sailing is a hobby that runs through their veins, which leads them to look for courses and training, which will allow them to rent a boat for self-indulgence.

I met with Mickey Weinstein, a skipper and sailing instructor from Haifa, who managed to gain a lot of experience in professional commercial sailing in the field of instruction and is also certified as a sailing instructor by the American Sailing Association ASA. He previously managed the Haifa branch of the club and the school for skippers "Tashut" and today heads the Haifa branch of the "uBoat" motor sailing club. In recent years he has been training skippers for a 30 boat license, and even passes on his knowledge and experience to veteran skippers. In collaboration with "uBoat" he is a course instructor for the 12 Otzma A boat and the 13 Otzma B boat course, and he is an instructor for the Mititi Halach As part of the 40 - Master Skipper sailing course and the 60 international sailing course.

Before you jump into the deep waters of Haifa, here are some important things to know

. A skipper is the person in command of a boat - the captain, if you will.

The skipper is responsible for the boat, as well as the comfort and safety of the people on board.

Although the title "Skipper" might fit nicely under a neat little definition.

If you consider everything the skipper is required to do, it's quite a lot.

• Maintaining everyone's safety - the skipper makes sure that everyone on board knows the safety procedures and adheres to them, from the arrival at the marina to how to behave in emergency situations.

• Cruise planning - understanding the state of the sea and keeping up to date with weather forecasts help the skipper choose the best time and route for sailing from one destination to another.

• Mooring - the skipper sails the boat in and out of the marina, moors it to the dock for the night and releases ropes in the morning for sailing.

• Navigating the boat - from reading the map and using electronic aids to finding the direction of the wind, adjusting the direction of the boat and the sails, professional skill is required to operate the boat and sail where the skipper wants it to go.

• Observing the laws of the sea and local regulations - the skipper is responsible for observing the sailing laws in the various sailing areas.

• Operating the equipment - today's boats come with advanced safety and navigation equipment, the skipper knows how to properly use these tools and maintain every part of the ship.

How do you get a skipper license in Haifa?

If you've been to driving school, you know how it works.

Also at sea, as on land, there is the theory, and there is the practical part - the practice.

At Mickey's Skipper School, you can register for courses in small groups, which include between 1 and 5 students at most.

The course includes theory preparation classes alongside practical sailings, during which the future skippers put into practice all the material learned in the course and accumulate sea hours.

In the next step, we begin the preparation for the practical test, and finally, we approach the test.

What happens after the course?

Those who have successfully completed their studies and have been trained as a full-fledged skipper have several options:

● Joining sailing clubs - there are sailing clubs in all the marinas in Israel.

Each club has unique characteristics, and all offer joint cruises with amateur and professional sailors or guided enrichment cruises.

● Yacht rental and independent sailing - as a certified skipper, you can rent a yacht and go on cruises alone or with friends and family.

At the various clubs you can purchase a card for renting a variety of yachts.

● Advanced licenses - your learning and training does not have to stop here.

Miki offers advanced courses for the well-heeled, which make it possible to sail yachts with more powerful engines, to sail more passengers for greater distances and to get more powers in the maritime area.

● Renting yachts abroad - the shores of Israel allow you to enjoy amazing views, but the skippers are adventurers by nature, and are always looking for new views to see and additional places to conquer. With a skipper's license you can sail to a variety of destinations throughout Europe and along the Mediterranean coast, including Greece, Cyprus, Montenegro , Spain and more.

● Buying a yacht - every skipper's dream is to own a private yacht.

Miki helps skippers trained at his school and skippers from all over the country find the yachts that suit their skills and needs and connect them with the leading yacht importers, including Eneteau, Bavaria, X-Yacht, Elan, Dufor and many more.
