According to a statement from his family, Starr died in a Houston hospital from complications from surgery.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our father and grandfather. We admired his amazing work ethic. We cherish the many wonderful memories we were able to make with him," Starr's son, Randall, said in a statement.

Starr, who was a member of former President Donald Trump's defense team during his first impeachment, also served as president of Baylor University from 2010 to 2016.

Baylor's president, Linda Livingston, said that "Starr was a dedicated public servant and a passionate supporter of religious freedom."
