Forest fires in southern France have forced 540 people to flee their homes.
"The fire that broke out yesterday in the Medoc region burned four houses and several buildings and consumed about 1,300 hectares of land," the governor of the Gironde region said today, as about 350 firefighters and six aircraft were battling the blaze.
According to data from the European Forest Fire Information Network, more than 60,000 hectares of fire have been burned in France this year, the largest part of which was southwest France, which, like the rest of Europe, faced waves of heat and drought during the summer that caused multiple forest fires across the continent.
