Mosquito Fire reaches almost 20,000 hectares;
only 16% of the fire is contained, says CAL Fire
By Taylor Romine
The blaze dubbed the Mosquito Fire in Northern California has reached 45,000 acres and is 16% contained, CAL Fire said in an update.
About 25 individual residential structures and 21 smaller structures are destroyed, they said.
Firefighters were able to make progress "building and strengthening the line of control" around the fire, the update says.
"Crews took advantage of cooler temperatures, higher humidity and the inversion layer that remained in place for most of the day to clean and secure their lines while fire activity moderated," the update said.
It also said that "crews worked to strengthen control lines through extensive cleaning of hot spots, fire-weakened trees and smoldering vegetation in the fire perimeter."
Fire crews battling the fast-moving Mosquito Fire faced increased fire activity Sunday after an inversion was lifted on the fire, CAL Fire said the day before.
As of Sunday night, the raging wildfire had burned 18,853 acres in Placer and El Dorado counties.
More than 11,000 people have been forced from their homes while 5,848 structures remain under threat.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan this week, his first trip outside of China since the start of the pandemic.
By CNN in Beijing
Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan from September 14 to 16, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said Monday.
President Xi is scheduled to attend the 22nd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Xi is attending at the invitation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of the Republic of Kazakhstan and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Earlier this month, Russia's envoy to Beijing said that President Vladimir Putin will meet with President Xi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Samarkand, according to the Russian state news agency TASS.
There was no mention of the meeting of the two men in the announcement made by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
This is the first time President Xi has left China since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.
The Chinese leader left mainland China on June 30 this year to visit Hong Kong for the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to China from the UK.
Xi's trip comes about a month before China's 20th National Congress, where he is expected to win an unprecedented third term, giving him another 5 years to rule the country.
