A Norwegian study has found that using an anti-diarrheal drug helps treat symptoms associated with the autism spectrum.
According to Frontiers in Pharmacology, researchers from the University of Oslo explained that the reuse of the drug (loperamide), which is prescribed against diarrhea, contributes to the treatment of social communication problems in autistic patients by feeding the drug with the proteins involved in the treatment of autism syndrome, indicating that (loperamide) is positively active. The patient's opiate receptors lead to positive results on his social behavior.
Professor Elise Koch saw the need to reuse the drugs in new treatments in an attempt to find a way to treat autism spectrum disorder because there are currently no drugs for it.
