In view of rising prices, the current time is a financial challenge for many families.

A large family knows how saving works.

Energy prices are skyrocketing and inflation is rising: the current situation can be a major financial burden, especially for many families.

Most parents therefore try not to spend money unnecessarily.

Instead, they put it aside to save for the next heating bill.

An extended family of 14 from Scotland can sing a song about it.

The Sullivans have developed their own money-saving system for families with twelve children over the years and share their top saving tips.

Zoe and Ben Sullivan are parents to twelve children.

They therefore have to "feed" more than an entire football team - which should be particularly challenging in today's world.

"We are so grateful for our children, they are the most important thing," says Zoe in a video clip to the

RTL

broadcaster .

The Sullivans feel well prepared for the coming crisis, after all, saving has always been the order of the day for the extended family.

They are almost real savings professionals.

The mother of 12 already has a solution ready: "It saves so much money, but I've always done it this way.

All these years.”

The Sullivan family lives by the motto “save where it hurts least.” That's why the family of 14 leaves their car as often as possible.

They always take their food with them from home when they go on excursions.

Not only as a large family can you save money by doing without the often expensive coffee to go or eating out in a café or restaurant.

With this trick, however, you don't have to do without activities entirely.

"When we do something like that, it's something special for us," explains father Ben.

On birthdays, for example, the family treats itself to a visit to a restaurant, for which they save up beforehand.

Instead of traveling, the Scottish family spends their holidays at home.

You're in luck, because the sea is practically on your doorstep.

But you can also have a good holiday at home in other regions.

If you live near Bergen, for example, you don't have to travel far to find some relaxation.

Day flights for hiking are also available here, the destinations of which may also be accessible by public transport.

“We are thankful for the life we have.

We consider ourselves so lucky to have our children.

They are the most important thing in our lives,” says mother Zoe.

But that alone is not enough to counter the rising prices.

So that the children can continue to pursue their hobbies, such as dancing, and the parents do not have to save on birthday presents, shopping in the supermarket, for example, remains.

In the meantime, the family is making cutbacks here and lowering its expenses.

That's why the parents stick to their given budget, which only provides 20 euros per week for each family member.

Upbringing: money tips from extended family - mother keeps household book

In order not to lose track, mother Zoe keeps a household book.

In it, she enters her income and expenses down to the last cent.

She also knows the prices of groceries, which ultimately makes it easier for her to shop thrifty in the supermarket.

Her tip is to buy groceries mainly when they are on sale and in large quantities, as they are usually cheaper.

So many cents come together over the course of a year.

In addition, she does not commit herself to specific brands and often avoids meat, as this product is expensive.

"We eat a lot of pasta, ready meals, vegetables, soups and stews," says Zoe.

Especially the latter are cheap and have a positive effect on the wallet.
