The Office of the Privacy Commissioner stated that from January to August this year, it received 386 and 17 enquiries and complaints respectively about the fraudulent use of citizens’ personal data. The cases involved not only posing as police officers and express delivery companies, but also fraudulent identities. The staff of the Centre for Health Protection claimed that the victim was diagnosed with the information, and the relevant cases include:

Impersonating a CHP staff member: claiming that the victim was diagnosed with a confirmed diagnosis, or became a close contact due to contact with a confirmed person and needs to be quarantined, thereby extracting personal information.

Impersonating the police: After the fraudster disclosed the victim's name and ID number, he claimed that the victim had been involved in the smuggling of vaccines or money laundering, and forwarded the call to another fraudster who pretended to be a police officer, thereby obtaining personal information.

Impersonating an employee of a courier company: Provide a link similar to the courier company’s website, ask the victim to provide his address to deliver the mail, pay for the mail first, and then collect the victim’s credit card number and name.

The Privacy Department pointed out that there has been an increase in cases of spoofing personal data through bogus phone calls, emails or text messages recently. If it is found that their personal data has been stolen and involved in a criminal offence, they should also report to the police as soon as possible.
