The Friends of the Theater Association in Lattakia, in cooperation with the Arab Cultural Center in Tartous, presented the play “A request but” based on the text “A request for her hand in marriage” by the Russian writer Anton Chekhov.
The work that embodies the lifestyle of the bourgeoisie and its approach to matters from the perspective of condescension and bragging about owning material and luxuries. The director and founder of the association, Akram Shaheen, said in a statement to SANA: The work falls within the light social comedy framework and is shown for the first time, pointing out that the work will move after Tartous to the governorates of Homs and Latakia.
The work, although it was written in 1888, presents the lifestyle of empty people in every sense of the word, according to the actor Ahmed Jamali, who embodied the role of the father, indicating that in moments these people strip themselves intellectually to wrestle over the simplest things.
Abdul Qader Houria, a third-year student in business management, embodied the role of the weak, strong young “Ivan” who came to ask for the hand of the neighbor’s daughter “Natasha” to enter into a conflict with her and her father over land ownership and bragging about the breed and strength of the dog in each family, considering that one of the most important factors for the success of the work taken from International novels after the passage of time is the adherence of the work team based on them to the general atmosphere of that novel in terms of time period, dress and way of life with the style of dialogue.
Elissar Kosa saw the law student who played the role of the girl “Natasha” and lives with her father, and although he relies on her to manage the affairs of the house, he wants to find a suitable husband for her, explaining that the play contains a social idea that shows how the feudal class deals with man, land and marriage.
And she considered that the theater audience's response to the moments of silence and the details of all the parts of the play gives a wonderful feeling of passion and presence in the world of theater, which puts the actor and theatrical work as a whole before a greater and deeper responsibility to pay attention to the content presented to him.
