Chimney sweeper Dieter Wenzl doesn't expect any "big hype" when it comes to putting disused stoves back into operation.

The gas crisis is driving people around.

And politics.

In the Free State, decommissioned ovens can now be reactivated - but there are clear regulations.

District

– Some people get queasy when thinking about winter.

Is there enough gas, will the living room be warm?

These are unfamiliar questions that concern many people.

And they sometimes bring unusual answers.

Because of the crisis, the Free State of Bavaria is making it possible for wood stoves that have actually been shut down to be used again temporarily.

"The proclamation of the gas emergency plan and the recent activities of the federal legislature justify this," explains Klaus Mergel, deputy press spokesman for the district.

Specifically, it is about wood fireplaces that do not comply with the requirements of the Federal Immission Control Act and are therefore no longer allowed to be used.

They can be put back into operation under certain conditions – and for a limited period until August 2023.

Gas crisis: use a wood stove - there are clear regulations

On the one hand, this requires that the operator has filled out a form, after which he wants to keep the wood stove available for emergency operation.

As a result, the fireplace is still regularly checked by a chimney sweep - albeit not as frequently as an active stove.

Harmful environmental effects, for example due to excessive smoke development, are therefore not to be expected from the affected systems.

By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

In addition, commissioning is only permitted if an existing gas heating system is "completely or partially replaced".

According to Mergel, the exemption does not apply to households that also heat with oil or wood pellets, for example, and want to contain the increased costs with their wood stove.

Last but not least, the use of the decommissioned stove must be applied for at the district office and the responsible chimney sweep must also be informed.

Energy crisis: Putting wood stoves into operation means effort

So far, the district office has registered little interest in putting such wood-burning stoves back into operation.

According to Mergel, there have only been one or two applications so far.

Chimney sweeper Dieter Wenzl, who is responsible for the "Peißenberg I" district, is not surprised.

"I don't think that will be the big hype either," says Peißenberger, to whom not a single homeowner has reported the exemption.

"There are not many fireplaces that are shut down and not replaced." Because most people appreciate the warmth of a wood stove - and not just the sight of it.

In addition, the re-commissioning of a shut-down furnace entails a great deal of work.

Applications would have to be made, and then it would have to be turned twice a year.

Depending on when the last fireplace show was, such a show could also be due again.

On top of that, you also need wood to operate the stove.

And with that, even with this type of heating, you have the change you need.
