In the center of Kochel, the new company "Offsidecamper" has recently been attracting attention.

It specializes in the expansion and conversion of motorhomes.

Kochel am See – During the Corona period, camping vehicles have become a mega trend.

Not knowing what was to come, Julian Höck from Obersöchering founded the company "Offsidecamper" together with Patrick Streegels in 2019, at that time based in Eschenlohe.

"The idea was born in our family," says the young family man (33) in retrospect.

Höck is a master motor vehicle technician and wanted to set up something of his own for everything to do with camping vehicles.

The company, which also owns Höck's wife Fränze and Torsten Grobbel (silent partner), moved into the old post office building in Kochel a few weeks ago.

You can't do postal business there anymore.

Deutsche Post sold the building in 2000 and was then only a tenant until the end of 2021 in order to maintain a delivery base.

However, since this has been newly built for the entire region in Habach, the building in Kochel has finally been empty, there is only one DHL Packstation.

The fact that there is new life in the old post office became known a few days ago when the company name "Offsidecamper" was written in huge letters on the house wall.

This is currently causing a debate in the village.

With the implementation one is "not quite happy" says Höck and promises: "It should be improved." In addition, one is still in correspondence with the district office regarding the change of use for the building.

Höck and Streegels are working on three or four vehicles in the inner courtyard.

The company does not sell campers, but the owners have to come to them to discuss the desired changes or can have a vehicle completely rebuilt.

Since they were positively mentioned in an online forum, they have customers from all over Germany, reports Höck.

"Offsidecamper" has specialized in Mercedes Sprinter, Vario, Unimog as well as VW Crafter, T5, T6 and Rover Defender.

"The owners come with individual requests for their vehicle, such as roof structures, interior fittings of cabins or new kitchen units," the 33-year-old gives a few examples.

Again and again he works together with a carpenter.

With his concept, he "found a gap in the market," says Höck.

He is now networked nationwide, also in order to be able to obtain various parts.

"That's extreme, for example in terms of demand for solar modules for the roof." The corona pandemic and the associated standstill in China, combined with container waiting times in the seaports, would have a major impact on the international market.

Campers, says Höck, want to be more and more self-sufficient with their vehicles these days.

If you want to have your vehicle converted or upgraded by him, you will have to wait several months.

"We would like to hire more employees, but nobody can be found."

“We are not noisy”

The old post office is currently being converted into an office and warehouse building.

Julian Höck is happy to have found a new home in Kochel.

The plan is to have the yard covered.

His operation is not noisy, he says and emphasizes.

"We are not a car repair shop."
