SNCF could increase the price of its tickets in 2023

2022-09-14T18:45:06.450Z

This year, the public group, which is the largest industrial consumer of electricity in France, will pay 600 million instead of the budgeted 300 million.

The CEO of the SNCF, Jean-Pierre Farandou, has made his accounts.

The surge in energy prices will lead to an additional cost of 300 million this year.

The public group, which is the largest industrial consumer of electricity in France, will pay 600 million instead of the 300 million budgeted before the war in Ukraine.

The rail operator limited the breakage thanks to a hedging system.

Clearly, he had bought his electricity in advance, before the costs rose.

This year, the passenger will therefore not suffer the consequences: no increase in the price of train tickets in 2022.

But, in 2023, the bill will increase further.

“Next year, we are still covered, but a little less.

(…) With the price of the moment, we would have at this stage an additional cost for electricity alone of 1.6 to 1.7 billion, ”

said Jean-Pierre Farandou in the Senate on Wednesday.

Half will concern daily trains (Transiliens and TER), the other half the TGV.

“If we directly passed on (this increase) to the cost of the ticket, we would have to increase the TGV tickets by 10%

”, explains Jean-Pierre Farandou.

Obviously, the SNCF will not increase its prices by 10%: that would reduce its sales and strangle its customers, who are also citizens.

“Rest assured, we will not pass on 100% of the costs to customers”

, said the CEO, who nevertheless does not rule out increases:

“Will prices be increased?

At which level?

How?

It's not decided yet."

In daily trains, the additional cost should be borne by local authorities.

"That's several tens of millions a year for each of the regions,"

said Jean-Pierre Farandou.
