Unterallgäu – The second check confirmed the strong rating for the two rest areas in the eastern district of Unterallgäu.

Once again, the ACE Auto Club Europa examined 19 unmanaged motorway rest areas in the Allgäu and discovered deficiencies.

The Kammlachtal and Wertachtal car parks each score “very well”.

For a whole weekend, the Allgäu district board of the ACE Auto Club Europa was out and about on the Allgäu motorways.

In the second part of the rest area check as part of the "Germany, Your Rest Areas" club initiative, 19 unmanaged rest areas on the A7 and A96 were checked again.

A first test had already taken place in June.

The result this time: After two checks, the eight facilities with toilets were rated “very good” overall, with the rest area “Kammlachtal-Nord” performing best across the whole of the Gäu with 14 out of a possible 17 points.

Seven facilities without a toilet scored “good” overall.

The “Buxheimer Wald” rest area received the best rating here, with seven out of twelve possible points.

The remaining four facilities without a toilet failed completely: "Seebach" (Dietmannsried), "Vorwald-Ost" (Durach), "Vorwald-West" and "Brühl-Ost" (Kirchdorf) were unable to make up ground in the second test either .

“Seebach” received the worst rating with only 2.5 out of twelve possible points.

"Actually, the only positive thing to mention here is that there are enough rubbish bins," says ACE district chairman Thomas Wilhelm.

But that's it with positive impressions: There are no disabled parking spaces and no lighting, no seating and no noise protection.

And at the second check, there was still a lot of rubbish scattered around the rest area.

“Three points on the first check, two on the second – that means 'failed'.

I can't advise anyone in good conscience to take a break at the 'Seebach' rest area on the A7."

says the regional officer in Club Service, Ursula Hildebrand, who accompanied the checks.

"Neither families nor older people find optimal conditions here - and as a woman I would never head for the rest area in the dark," advises Hildebrand.

Wilhelm: "It has little to do with travel waste"

The “Brühl-Ost” rest area on the A7 also failed.

A few garbage cans overflowed here - and a curious find was documented.

Next to a full garbage can was a suitcase that was disposed of here without further ado.

“It is unbelievable what is dumped at the rest areas – household rubbish and the remains of renovation work have already been discovered.

One suitcase, however, is new,” marvels Wilhelm.

"A lot of what's in the bins or scattered around the site has little to do with travel waste."

So there is a lot to do when it comes to cleanliness – the travelers could do most of it themselves, the ACE appeals in the press release.

But the experts also believe that there is a lot of catching up to do when it comes to accessibility: At the “Rottachtal-West” rest area, for example, there is an emergency telephone that is hardly accessible for people with restricted mobility.

A narrow path leads in the direction of the column, at the end of which those seeking help meet steps that then lead to the emergency telephone.

“For people with walking disabilities or even in a wheelchair, this column is practically inaccessible.

They depend on help to get help,” complains Wilhelm.

By the way, in the Lower Allgäu it looks “very good” in comparison – both the Kammlachtal and the two Wertachtal car parks score with this rating.

The front runner is the stop in Kammlachtal, which achieved 14 (North) and 13.5 points (South) in the ACE examiners' assessment.

Both in terms of cleanliness and equipment (seating options, green spaces, noise protection), the parking lots score almost full points – only noise protection is missing.

The toilets and traffic safety are also rated very positively.

There is potential for improvement, for example by creating baby changing facilities or a playground and by installing e-charging stations.

Exactly these possibilities for improvement are also seen by the inspectors at the Wertachtal car parks, which with 13 (North) and 13,

In the Allgäu general overview, the ACE comes to the conclusion that “there are really good rest areas where you can take a break.

But there are also facilities that you should rather avoid,” says Wilhelm.

“It is planned that new rest areas will be built.

As ACE, we think it makes sense sooner or later to abandon the many rest areas without toilets and instead build rest areas with separate parking areas for trucks and cars, toilet buildings and decent lighting,” says Hildebrand.

Then there would also be space for disabled parking spaces and decent lighting.

In autumn, the ACE will evaluate the club initiative "Germany, Your Rest Areas" nationwide and present the results.
