As is well known, Thomas Müller is not only a football star, but also a horse breeder.

How that is possible despite his young age and how it is compatible with football.

Wettlkam – No German footballer has won more trophies than him: Thomas Müller, who turned 33 on Tuesday, is the pro on the pitch.

He is just beginning to become an expert in the paddock: "As a breeder, I'm still very young, the best horse breeders are mostly in their mid-80s. And there's a reason for that," says Müller to the

Bayerisches Landwirtschaftswochenblatt

, with which he explains in detail talks about his horse breeding.

"First of all, the experience and secondly, it takes time to be able to implement your ideas." And a lot of time: "By the time you can finally assess the heredity of a horse, you have gray hair."

Well Wettlkam: Thomas Müller and his wife Lisa want to expand the stud farm

The Bavarian professional runs the Wettlkam estate north of Holzkirchen together with his wife, dressage rider Lisa Müller.

And the stud farm is supposed to grow a little: "We bought a lot of foals last year and now have the prospect of another branch office that should go into operation at the end of the year, then I'll have around 25 hectares," estimates Müller.

And he adds: "They also need a bit of space to gallop, the young talents."

Thomas Müller is a country boy, he grew up in Pähl in Pfaffenwinkel, his uncle had a dairy farm, another has sheep - "I grew up with animals and plants," he says to the

Bayerisches Landwirtschaftswochenblatt

.

And even now almost all of his neighbors are farmers, and Müller says he has contact with many of them.

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Holzkirchen newsletter.

And he himself is more concerned with agriculture than before: “As a child or teenager, it was all about football.

Now it's mainly about football for me, but you do think about when is the right day to bring in the hay.

You get a better sense of why your uncle used to get nervous about putting his hay in.

At the time I thought, well, what is he doing around, that's just a big deal.

Today I know that that can also be important to you.” Meanwhile, Thomas Müller was looking forward to the Champions League game against FC Barcelona, but didn't want to be asked about a specific ex-colleague.

Thomas Müller about his stud farm: "Keeping livestock means 24/7"

And Müller also knows that farming is an obligation: “Keeping livestock means 24/7, so you can't say today is Sunday.

We now have more of a top view and an understanding that farmers are often out and about working on Sundays as well.”

The most recent project at Gut Wettlkam is the stallion station.

"Until 2018 I only had three mares, when they were still very small.

But I do intend to expand that further and, above all, that the whole thing is going in the right direction in terms of quality,” he says.

Above all, Müller makes sure that the horse's body is geared towards the sport.

"I want to have an active and fast-footing hind leg," he says.

But: "What I don't pay attention to is the color.

Personally, I don't give a damn about the colour."

Gut Wettlkam: Horse breeding is an emotional undertaking for Thomas Müller

Breeding is often about the big emotions: "If you work with animals, then there is already a very wide range of emotional rollercoasters covered," reports Müller.

“It starts with the joy of a successful birth.

But we also had a yearling who suddenly got a fever overnight, in the evening we had to drive him to the clinic and half a day later he didn't get up again.

And in the end nobody can tell you, despite pathology and the like, where the cause actually lay.

Joy and sorrow have always been close together.” The icing on the cake is for horses that you have bred to do well in sport.

And what Müller enjoys most is watching the animals grow up.

"When a herd of young horses gallops across the paddock, the ground trembles so slightly, it's just a pleasure to watch."

Thomas Müller: The football star is so good at riding himself

Incidentally, Müller himself rarely rides.

"I can hold on to a horse, I also know how to trigger series changes in a horse that can already do that," he says.

“But stylistically, the whole thing still needs to be clearly questioned.

And I don't really have to sit on top of a young horse." Of course, there is a risk: What if the horse lover Müller is thrown off and injured - and the soccer professional misses a Bayern Munich game as a result?

He is contractually allowed to ride, says Müller.

"I'm relatively free, but of course nothing should happen.

It's also too important to me that I'm still fit on the football pitch.

But in the future I would like to further improve my riding skills.”

He is not quite sure in which division, he has never jumped.

But: "At some point I want to go to a tournament and expose myself to all this exam stress, to get a feel for how it feels." Maybe the football pro will become a riding star after all.
