The Christian churches in Homs held this evening a joint prayer for peace in Syria, in the courtyard of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, Umm al-Zinar, accompanied by a procession of the icon (the Virgin of the Passion, the Comforter of the Syrians) on some of the city's churches.

The participants in the prayer prayed to God to restore security to all parts of Syria and to relieve the pressures that the Syrian people are currently experiencing as a result of the economic sanctions imposed on them, stressing that by uniting them in prayer, their faith is strengthened and their hearts are opened to their capacity to receive the peace of the Lord.

In statements to SANA, Archbishop Matta al-Khoury, Metropolitan of Homs, Tartous and Hama for the Syriac Orthodox, said: “This event is renewed and the Christian denominations gather to pray for peace in Syria, which has suffered from the scourge of terrorism and the impact of economic sanctions on it. Toured most of the Syrian governorates and churches during the past years and today we will bid farewell to them via a procession from the Syriac Catholic Church to Umm al-Zinar Church to the Church of the Forty Martyrs and then to the Church of Our Lady of Peace to be deposited tomorrow in the neighborhood Mar Elias Monastery in the town of Rablah.

The Archbishop added: “Prayer is an affirmation that we are advocates of peace and we ask for it for our beloved country, Syria, with all its spectrums, to overcome its wounds in light of the terrorism and unjust economic pressures it has been exposed to and exposed to.”

In turn, the priest of the Church of the Virgin Mary in the town of Maskanah and responsible for the event of the Peace Prayer for Syria, Father Luke Awad, stated that the idea was launched by drawing an icon of the Virgin of Pain, the comforter of the Syrians, who was blessed by the Patriarchs of Syria and His Holiness Pope Francis in Rome. The war period, noting the importance of effectiveness in expressing the unity of Christians and standing side by side in prayer with one heart, praying to God to relieve the Syrian people and the return of safety and stability to our dear country and tranquility to the souls of all its sons.

The event was attended by the heads of the Christian churches in Homs and some participants from the Aid Foundation for the Church in Need in the Vatican.
