At the start of the citizens' survey on the matter of the "Weilheim bypass", the Greens are clearly in favor of a "no" to a bypass road - and are counting on a mobility turnaround.

Weilheim – Weilheim's Greens "could have somehow made friends" with a central tunnel, says parliamentary group spokesman Manuel Neulinger.

But after the state building authority sorted out this version as "uneconomical", none of the remaining variants came into question for the local association.

The Greens, who currently have six of the 30 city council members, are campaigning for a “no” to the construction of a Weilheim bypass.

Relief by bypassing would be small, the damage great

This decision, which is explained in a two-page position paper, was "not made easy", emphasized Neulinger at a press conference on Tuesday: One can see the need of many Weilheimers to be relieved of traffic.

"We also want to have car traffic out of the city - but a bypass would not be the right way to do it."

Every route, whether in the west or east, would "destroy valuable natural and landscape areas," warn the Greens.

Agricultural areas would be "irretrievably lost", affected local recreation areas "no longer recognizable".

In view of global developments such as global warming and increasing heavy rainfall, the party considers this new road to be "yesterday's planning".

Arguments for the Weilheim bypass are “not valid”

The arguments put forward for the Weilheim bypass are “not valid” for the Greens.

At twelve percent, through traffic is significantly lower here than “in classic transit locations”.

The main part of the traffic would “not disappear from the city even with a bypass”, but the new road “attracts further traffic and noise”.

Conclusion of parliamentary group Vice Brigitte Gronau: A bypass would "relocate the problem, but it would not be a solution".

And it would be "complete in 15 years at the earliest" - that long there would be "no relief in Weilheim, but a lot of burden".

Greens see "uncertainties" regarding the east tunnel

The Greens do not believe in "paradise conditions for cyclists and pedestrians", as some advocates of the bypass promise, because the current B2 in town, Schützenstraße or Obere Stadt could "quite certainly not be reclassified as local roads".

And: The tempting "East Tunnel", which would be realized in an open construction, has "many imponderables".

According to Gronau, this form of bypass would by no means be invisible.

Neulinger emphasizes that the traffic congestion in Weilheim, which cannot be ignored, cannot be solved with cycle paths alone.

It takes "a combination of many measures to achieve a state that is okay".

For the Greens (who also belong to the new action alliance “No to the expansion of the B 2”), the “mobility turnaround on site” includes an inner-city speed limit of 30, “consistent implementation of the cycle path concept decided by the city council”, the examination of possible one-way regulations on main traffic axes, “living without a car” for large new construction projects, hourly service for regional bus services and a railway expansion.
