A first case of monkey pox was confirmed on Thursday (September 15th) in Ukraine in a patient who was hospitalized, the Ministry of Health said.

The patient is suffering from a fever and a rash, the ministry added on Facebook without further details.

The infection was confirmed on Thursday September 15 by a PCR test.

An epidemiological investigation is underway, but according to the first data, the ministry said, the patient would have contracted the disease “

in one of the big cities

” of the country, plagued since February by the invasion of its Russian neighbor.

According to the WHO dashboard which lists all confirmed cases, as of September 7, there were 54,709 cases and 18 deaths recorded in 125 countries, 98% of which are in Europe and North America.

The disease usually heals on its own after two to three weeks, but it can lead to serious complications, including bacterial infections.
