In a video that has gained more than 3.5 million views on Instagram, a pair of surfers show how they clean the toilet in the bathroom - and their method is definitely sick.

In the short clip, a woman is seen disassembling her toilet seat and putting it in the dishwasher along with the drinking glasses, food bowls and other kitchen utensils.

Yes, their method is to flush the toilet through the dishwasher.

"Hey people, I'm going to react violently because - what the hell?!" wrote an angry Twitter user alongside photos of the method and another swore: "If you invite me to dinner and I see your toilet seat in the dishwasher, I'm turning around and not coming back."

"Putting your toilet seat in the dishwasher is diabolical behavior," chided another.

The video, shared by Instagram influencers Janelle Plum and Kate Heinzelman, has garnered more than 16,000 comments similar to the ones above.

"No. The water in the dishwasher doesn't come close to being hot enough to disinfect the toilet - or the dishwasher afterwards," one wrote and another added alongside a vomiting emoji: "It's insanely disgusting."

And the responses were not long in coming:

Despite the horrifying thought of combining fecal bacteria with our dinner plate, in 2016 microbiologist David Coyle of the University of California, Davis found that a dirty spoon contains more bacteria than a used toilet seat.

Coyle tested toilet seats "on several occasions" and told the Washington Post: "I didn't find anything too exciting about them."

Australia's leading consumer advocacy group, Choice, conducted research in 2021 on items that should and should not be put in the dishwasher - including computer keyboards, Lego pieces, fish and of course toilet seats.

"While we definitely don't recommend cleaning your toilet seat in the dishwasher, if you absolutely must - then you'll want to insert it properly to make sure it comes out clean," the experts advised.

Although many doubt and are disgusted by this method, there are some who are not shocked.

One wrote: "Knowing how often I clean my toilet, I wouldn't mind doing it. I would still clean the toilet seat before putting it in the dishwasher. I don't use my dishwasher either, I wash my dishes by hand so I I really don't see a problem with that."
