Minister of Social Equality Merav Cohen announced this morning (Thursday) that 200 million shekels will be added per year, to be paid by the German government to thousands of nursing Holocaust survivors.

In this way, about 14 thousand additional holocaust survivors will receive an additional NIS 1,200 per month.

This, after negotiations that lasted several months with the German Minister of Finance, Christian Lindner.

It was also agreed between the ministers of the two countries on the deepening of the professional relationship and the promotion of a strategic plan for the commemoration of the Holocaust around the world.

This, against the background of the retreat that has occurred in relation to knowledge about the Holocaust in Europe and against the background of recently published surveys, which show that every third German holds negative views towards Israel.

Minister Cohen talked about the work with the German minister.

"We work around the clock with the goal of increasing the budgets that are transferred to survivors in Israel. In the last year, we managed to raise more than NIS 1.2 billion for the benefit of Holocaust survivors, both from the Israeli government's budgets and from budgets that we raised from the world in cooperation with the Claims Conference," said Cohen.

"The meaning is that thousands of survivors in Israel received a significant increase in their income this year, an increase that after this agreement could reach NIS 27,000 per year."

"At the same time as improving the economic situation of the survivors, we are constantly working to improve the services provided to them with an emphasis on bringing the services to the survivors' homes: from health insurance representatives who reach them, through psychologists to volunteers who visit their homes on a regular weekly basis," the minister continued .

"The agreement signed today is specifically focused on the issue of nursing and will provide more budgets to patients who need the assistance of a nursing care provider. In my eyes, this is a real life saver. I thank the professional teams of the two governments who worked hard over the past year on this agreement. We will continue to work with all our might for the survivors."
