Bad news for train passengers: In winter there is another price increase.

As a reason, the railway refers to the rising energy prices.

Berlin – With the nine-euro ticket, train travel became popular again, at least temporarily.

But after the bargain ticket, there is now a risk of a cost shock.

Deutsche Bahn passengers have to be prepared for a fare increase this winter.

Board member Michael Peterson made this clear on Wednesday.

Deutsche Bahn: "Of course we will have to raise prices"

Peterson referred to the sharp rise in energy costs.

"Of course we will have to raise prices," said Peterson on the sidelines of the presentation of a new train in Berlin.

Deutsche Bahn will inform you about the increase at the end of the month.

Calculated over the year, the group expects additional energy costs of around two billion euros.

The prices usually increase when the timetable changes in mid-December.

A fare increase of an average of four percent has already been announced for regional transport outside of transport associations and national tariffs.

The most recent major price increase was in December 2021. At that time, ticket prices rose by around 1.9 percent on average.

The BahnCards were 2.9 percent more expensive.

Deutsche Bahn presents stepless ICE

Actually, the event where Peterson commented on the awards was more about good news.

Because Deutsche Bahn has presented its first ICE train with stepless entry and exit.

Wheelchair users will be able to board these trains without outside help for the first time, as the company explained on Wednesday.

Passengers with a lot of luggage or children also benefit from level access.

The so-called ICE L is built by the Spanish manufacturer Talgo.

From autumn 2024, 23 of the trains are to be used in stages, initially on the Berlin-Amsterdam route.

"In 2026, the trains will also run on the tourist connections to Sylt and Oberstdorf," said the railway.

The ICE L is 256 meters long, consists of 17 cars and has a top speed of 230 kilometers per hour.

It offers 85 seats in first class and 477 in second class.
