In recent years, the government has promoted STEM education, namely Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, to inspire students' scientific and technological innovation capabilities.

"01 Education" visited many primary and secondary schools and prepared a series of STEM education interview reports to help parents understand the latest trends in STEM education!

This "01 Education" invited Wanjun Huizhi Middle School in Tiu Keng Ling to share the school's STEM education strategy with Principal Zhang Zhiwen, Chief Director of the Information Technology and Innovation Development Department, Mr.

Wanjun Huizhi Middle School believes that STEM is a skill worth learning for all students, and in conjunction with the school's "deep learning" education strategy, it can inspire students' communication and collaboration skills for all-round development.

"STEM for all" and "STEM for elite"

Principal Zhang said that the school's STEM strategy is divided into "STEM for all" and "STEM for elite". The former allows all students to learn a wide range of basic STEM knowledge and be exposed to new technologies. Because students will need to be exposed to technology in any industry in the future, so It is very important for students to be exposed to STEM from middle school.

The latter is aimed at students with potential or interested in STEM, providing them with extended courses in different fields, such as inventing works to participate in different competitions.

Mr. Tsang Ming-kang, Chief Director of the Information Technology and Innovation Development Department of Wanjun Huizhi Middle School, said that "STEM for elite" is not only for gifted students or a few students' reference, but is based on the learning of "STEM for all" to deeply develop students' interests or interests. range of potential.

Mr. Zeng emphasized that "STEM for elite" is actually an extension of "STEM for all", not just for a few students.

Students can participate in after-school activities or extended learning according to their personal interests and interests. For example, students who are interested in drones can study drone technology to develop their potential.

STEM not only creates knowledge, but also learns to collaborate, communicate and learn

Wanjun Huizhi Middle School advocates Deep Learning, where students can learn STEM knowledge as well as communication and collaboration skills.

One of the characteristics of the school's STEM curriculum is the addition of the 6C (Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, Character, Citizenship, Collaboration) elements of "deep learning". To learn how to communicate and collaborate with classmates, Principal Zhang even bluntly said that "this is the first priority", because when students form teams to participate in invention competitions, in addition to absorbing and applying knowledge, they need to communicate and share their ideas with teammates during the research and development process. Introducing works in competitions or exhibitions requires not only relevant knowledge, but also interpersonal skills.

Teacher Zeng also mentioned that in addition to acquiring relevant knowledge from STEM, the more important thing is to learn how to learn. Under the guidance of the teacher, students can learn online or identify the correct data source.

After students learn to learn, they can learn by themselves when they encounter things they don’t know, and face future challenges.

Wanjun Huizhi Middle School incorporates STEM elements into the curriculum. For example, junior high school students will learn programming knowledge in computer science.

Wanjun Huizhi Middle School believes that students should not be exposed to STEM only after class, so it restructures the IT curriculum, for example, from junior high school computer courses, to add STEM elements, and to separate STEM into a science and innovation subject that all students must take .

In addition to learning common programming knowledge, students will also learn about drones, VR, AR, laser cutting and other knowledge. In recent years, elements such as artificial intelligence, holographic lenses (Honolens), metaverse and immersive experience have been added.

As for high school students, because they have to prepare for the DSE exam, STEM is not included in the formal curriculum, but the school will also provide after-school courses, after-school activities, and arrange visits and participate in competitions.

Outside the classroom, students can also participate in the afternoon science and innovation lecture organized by the teacher, showing some interesting life topics related to science, such as liquid nitrogen ice cream workshop, food printing technology, and the authenticity of the finished product surprised many students.

Teacher Lin pointed out that their course content is mainly based on the things that students will come into contact with in real life, so the school decided to add artificial intelligence, which has been used in all walks of life in recent years, and drones are a new trend in the logistics industry.

Mr. Lin bluntly said that these contents are less interesting than building robots, but he believes that it is necessary to equip students with the relevant basic knowledge to meet the challenges after joining the society.
