Since 1301, the titles of Prince of Wales have been attributed to English sovereigns. Investitures particularly badly experienced by the Ga

In 1969 Charles' investiture as Prince of Wales was watched on television by millions around the world.

Prince William may not have the same reception.

Nearly 25,000 people have signed a petition launched a week ago to remove the headline which the signatories say is "an insult to Wales and a symbol of historic oppression".

In a keynote speech delivered last Thursday, the day after Queen Elizabeth II passed away, King Charles III announced the new titles of his eldest son and daughter-in-law.

“With Catherine by her side, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will I am sure continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to put the excluded at the center of the debate,” he said.

But in Caernafon, a town in north-west Wales which hosted the investiture of Prince Charles in 1969, opinions differ on this title granted to an Englishman.

“Many are those who refuse this title of Prince of Wales, because they think that it should return to a Welshman”, reacts Maria Sarnacki, the mayor of the city.

More than fifty years ago, the investiture of Prince Charles was badly received in Caernarfon: demonstrations took place around the site, and nationalists tried to plant a bomb on the railway tracks Charles took to the ceremony.

A bloody story

The town boasts of having the highest proportion of Welsh speaking people in the country.

A language that Charles tried to learn for a term at Aberystwyth University, 80 km south of Caernarfon.

The city's castle holds within its walls the bloody history of England and Wales.

The title of Prince of Wales originally went to Welsh princes, but the last, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, was killed in 1282 by King Edward I of England.

His head was then raised to the top of the Tower of London.

To tame Wales, Edward embarked on the frantic construction of castles among which Caernarfon, where his heir, the future Edward II, was born in 1284. He then gave the title of Prince of Wales to his son in 1301, and English rulers continued this tradition with their heirs.

“This title implies that Wales is still a principality, which weakens the status of Wales as a nation and a country.

Moreover, this title has absolutely no constitutional role for Wales, which today has a national parliament, ”says the petition challenging the nomination of Prince William.

King Charles is due to visit Cardiff, capital of Wales, on Friday, after visiting Edinburgh and Belfast during a tour that has shown that he intends to invest in the union of the United Kingdom.

But he has been criticized for appointing William Prince of Wales without consulting Welsh people, starting with their Prime Minister.
