Pigmentation is one of those things that most of us accept as fate - one fine day we simply discover in the mirror a new spot above the lips, on the forehead or on the cheeks, and we don't really understand why it is there and what we are supposed to do with it.

The good news is, indeed - there is something to be done.

Pigmentation in most cases is a reversible condition, and even if we do not reach full clarification, with the right treatment you can definitely see a significant improvement, one that will allow us to give up concealer and makeup and feel confident in our facial skin even when we are makeup-free.

But to understand exactly how to deal with pigmentation, it is important to first understand what caused it.

Pigmentation can appear at any age and stage of life, and is influenced by three main factors.

The first is exposure to the sun - and it's not just about aggressive tanning without a sun protection factor, on the contrary - in many cases the problem is those small "moments" in the sun that accumulate to damage the skin.

This is why it is necessary to take care of the skin even in winter, when there is no direct sun, and even if we are outside for a short time.

The second type of pigmentation develops as a result of hormonal changes such as pregnancy, childbirth and even stress, and the third type is created as a result of "trauma" to the skin, such as an injury or contusion.

so what are we doing?

The best treatment for pigmentation is undoubtedly prevention before it arrives, and the solution is known and simple to protect ourselves from exposure to the sun (yes, this means applying sunscreen even if we are "just" walking from the car to the office) and above all to use active ingredients that keep the skin healthy, and are suitable for long-term use, throughout the year (as long as they are not exposed to direct sunlight).

But if we already see the stain in the mirror - there are three types of treatments to which we can turn:

Professional cosmetics

: it is true that today you can find a selection of treatments "on the shelf" in the pharmacy chains, but since these are preparations intended for the majority of the population and for a wide variety of problems, they will usually be are less effective than preparations that have been professionally adjusted, and will not contain active substances that will really manage to treat the problem.

Using a product that was recommended to a friend or relative will not be correct either - because it will not be adapted precisely to your skin.

The best way to receive quality treatment that will really bring visible results is to contact a professional beautician, who will adjust the correct and most accurate treatment routine in a two-depth treatment - on the one hand, treatment of existing pigmentation while maintaining the health of the skin, and on the other hand, treatment of the cause of pigmentation, which is located deep in the skin.

Substances such as phenylethyl resorcinol will treat the stain by binding to melanin, which is the cause of darkness, and will make it transparent, lactic and kojic acid, together with arbutin and licorice extract suppress melanin and there are other substances such as oxy-thialozidine acid and carboxylic acid that binds to the copper ions in the melanocyte, and inhibits the ability to produce melanin in the early stages.

Instrument-based treatment

: One of the possible ways to remove existing spots is through IPL/laser.

This is a laser that lightens the spots, heats the deep layer of the skin and encourages it to produce new and fresh skin cells.

This is a treatment for pigmentation caused by exposure to the sun, and will not be suitable for the treatment of skin spots that originate from hormonal changes or skin trauma, as in such cases there may be an aggravation of the pigmentation.

Medical Care

: This is a more "aggressive" treatment based on a component called Retin A and hydroquinone and is not recommended for long-term use.

In cases where medical treatment is required - such as in cases of spots with unusual characteristics such as unclear borders, lack of symmetry, spots that appear suddenly or those that are painful or itchy, it is advisable to go for a dermoscopic examination.
