(CNN) --

It's clear that "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady "GGG" Golovkin aren't exactly fans of each other.

And after 24 rounds in the ring together, that might not be a surprise.

But after years of speculation, the two boxing greats will reignite their rivalry for the third and final time on Saturday in Las Vegas, with more than belts at stake.

  • This is the boxing record of "Canelo" Álvarez in 2022, against whom were his two defeats?

When the two touch gloves, their trilogy bout will be personal, as Alvarez told CNN Sport's Alex Thomas that it's "different" from their other bouts.

"I think it's different because we don't like each other," he explained.

"We have history, so it's a more exciting fight, for both of us, for the fans, for everyone."

"And I hate those kinds of people, like Golovkin says a lot of things about you and then when you have that person in front of you, they're like, 'Oh, I respect this, I respect that.' I hate that. I'm really excited to be back." .

Final chapter

The Alvarez-Golovkin rivalry has fascinated the boxing world for nearly five years, since their first fight, with ups, downs, thrills and falls along the way.

They first met in 2017, with GGG's WBC, WBA and IBO middleweight titles on the line;

the fight ended in a controversial draw in which many said the Kazakh fighter should have been declared the winner.

The controversial outcome of the fight culminated in the announcement of a rematch, which was called off after Álvarez tested positive for a banned substance.

The Mexican boxer was sanctioned for six months.

Finally, just over a year after their first fight, the two met in a rematch, which was also not without controversy.

Although Alvarez won a majority decision after 12 rounds, many again debated whether that result was correct, saying once again that Golovkin had outboxed Alvarez.

And now, almost four years after their second fight, they will get back in the ring.

Alvarez will put his undisputed super middleweight titles on the line, while for Golovkin, he will fight at weight for the first time in his career.

Golovkin, 40, is coming off a middleweight unification victory against Japan's Ryōta Murata, his first fight in more than a year.

But for Álvarez, the story is different.

In their previous bout, held in May, Russia's Dmitry Bivol stunned him in their light heavyweight title showdown, with all three judges scoring in Bivol's favor, marking the second loss of his career.

Alvarez moved up in weight, though he doesn't blame that gain for the unanimous loss: "A lot happened in my training camp."

However, that defeat only made him more dangerous, as he says he "learned a lot" from her.

"I think I'm more dangerous than before because I'm hungry to come back," Alvarez said.

"And I'm very competitive. Like I said before, when you're looking for greatness, it's going to be tough times. But that doesn't mean I'm not going to achieve what I want, my goals. So I'm looking forward and I'm ready to come back."

While his trilogy fight with GGG is the latest in a long string of blockbuster fights for Alvarez, he says, as he gears up for his 62nd pro fight, that he's driven by more than just titles and championships.

"I always feel like the best boxer in the world, ever since I started boxing. I feel like the best because I'm the only boxer who doesn't need to take risks. I take risks because I want to be great, not just be a champion. There are many champions out there. The difference between them and me is that I risk everything to be great."

The fight can be seen live on DAZN PPV on September 17.
