Hussain Hassan and Azab Suleiman, from the village of Deir Mama, Hama, spend long hours weaving silk threads with remarkable speed on the wooden loom in a very precise process to produce shawls, handkerchiefs, clothes and other pieces of cloth made entirely of natural silk.

Regarding the stages of the silk industry, Hassan said during his speech to the SANA Youth Newsletter, “He and his wife raise silkworms that feed on mulberry trees to produce cocoons and extract silk threads from them and sew them on an old wooden loom that his family still keeps to this day because it was inherited by father and grandfather to eventually produce different Types of textiles made of medical silk.

Hassan indicated that he inherited this profession from his family and is working to revive it and pass it on to his children, especially that his village has been famous for this craft for thousands of years, noting that he and his wife produce handicrafts and heritage textiles that reflect the history and culture of their village.

Hassan pointed out that despite the difficulties they encounter in working, this craft provides many job opportunities for those who wish, but today there is a reluctance of the villagers from this profession due to the high costs and the absence of a market to sell products.

In turn, Azab Suleiman indicated that she benefited from her studies of the arts to help her husband work, as she implements designs and engravings to add beauty and elegance to their products to keep pace with the times, pointing out that this work achieved them independence and tranquility and helped them improve their economic situation.

She explained that the silk industry is a traditional heritage in the village, and most brides used to buy silk dresses and their own adornments to be a kind of souvenir to keep in the marital home, stressing the need to revive this craft and encourage women to practice it to preserve this heritage from disappearing.

Azab also indicated that she and her husband participate in work and production, and they participate in most exhibitions and bazaars to introduce the silk industry and marketing their products.

The people of Deir Mama village in the Masyaf region have preserved the silk industry, which has become a milestone in Syrian handicrafts, especially since the climate in the village helps to create the necessary environment for sericulture from its early stages to the stage of thread spinning.
