The Semptstadt is once again the center of the German athletics scene.

Erding – His athlete needs a run-up of six and a half meters to the outside, wrote the head coach of Bayer Uerdingen.

After all, his 75-year-old protégé jumps in the straddle.

"We'll do that," says Kerstin Weber from TSV Erding, who is hosting the German Seniors' Athletics Championships at the weekend.

Around 1000 athletes will choose their champions in the Sepp Brenninger Stadium.

"The age groups go from AK 35 in increments of five to AK 85/90," says Weber.

So it's no wonder that athletes still jump the straddle, also called "parallel waltz" according to Wikipedia, "because the jumper rolls over the bar on his stomach".

Until 1968, when a certain Dick Fosbury came along with his eponymous flop, the "dive roll" was the common high jump technique.

So also in Melbourne and Rome, where Almi Brömmel was at the Olympic Games in 1956 and 1960.

The 87-year-old from TSV 1860 Munich is probably the most prominent participant in the Erdinger competitions.

"But there are also some current senior world and European champions," says Weber, who is particularly looking forward to an athlete: Sören Voigt was active for TSV Erding for a long time before he moved to Saxony.

He now starts for LG Meißen.

In Erding he will compete in the M 45 in the discus throw and shot put.

"It will be his last competition.

Soren's wife gives birth to their second child.

Then there will be no time for training,” the TSV trainer knows from conversations with her old friend.

Because nobody makes it to a DM without training. The strict nomination distances and times ensure that.

And so the people of Erding can look forward to two days full of finals.

Every run is about medals.

"We wouldn't do the prelims as well," says Weber and talks about the tight schedule on Saturday and Sunday.

"It starts at 9 a.m. and ends around 6:30 p.m."

The runs start almost every minute.

“We have specially prepared a seat in the grandstand for the award ceremonies.

They usually take place on the home stretch, but we need them every minute," says Weber.

TSV is already used to a lot as the organizer of Bavarian championships, "but the Germans are a completely different number" - and can't be compared to the German all-around championships that TSV organized in 2003.

The German Athletics Association (DLV), for example, only wants to have trained referees in the interior and also sends twelve DLV people themselves, who act as chief referees over the individual competitions.

"With the Bavarian you have one for all throwing disciplines, with the DM one each for shot, hammer, discus and javelin," explains Weber, who, however, relies on her good network of judges - around 160 are needed - and helpers.

Because the competitions start at 9 a.m., the volunteers have to be there on Friday evening and provide the early starters with the starting documents the day before - moonlight check-in is not only available at Erding Airport, but also in the Sepp Brenninger Stadium.

And the all-round care?

For 1000 athletes and their families, others would let a caterer do the work.

TSV Erding takes matters into their own hands.

"We bought well," says Weber with the experience from countless events and the knowledge that the moms of the young Erdinger athletes will make enough cakes again.

But even Kerstin Weber admits: "There's a mammoth task waiting for us."

That's why nobody seems to be keen on hosting such championships, as can be seen from a technical article on lichtathletik.de.

That's why Jochen Schweitzer asked TSV.

This is Erdinger and at the same time DLV Vice.

"Erding is a good place for athletics with a proven organizer team", which, in addition to many championships, also organized the precamp for the German national squad before the European Championships in Munich.

The TSV will also organize this event together with the Bavarian Athletics Association, he is sure of, Schweitzer, who also emphasizes the value of the event for the Semptstadt: "Around 2500 people will be guests in Erding."

Many came with caravans, says Weber, who, by the way, will not heed a recommendation from the DLV.

“We will not charge admission fees.

Relatives often travel with them.

They come from Hamburg, Berlin or somewhere else.

We don't want to take three or more euros from them.

They should rather buy a pint from the innkeeper here and enjoy our food.” Speaking of long-distance and short-distance travellers: According to Weber, there is only one starter from the Erding district.

Dieter Heimstädt, teacher at the Anne Frank High School.

He will compete in the 100m, 200m flat, 100m hurdles and long jump and has good title chances.

The ambitions of the aforementioned straddle jumper are not known.

But he will get good conditions.

Everyone will see to that: Uerdinger and Erdinger.
