Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan agreed to a cease-fire on the common border, after an escalation in confrontations between the two sides, which left more than 30 wounded.

"The heads of the national security committees of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Kamchibek Tashiev and Simon Yatimov, have reached a ceasefire agreement as of 16:00 local time," the Kyrgyz Border Guard Service said in a statement today, AFP reported.

He also met the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and his Kyrgyz counterpart Sadr Jabarov on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan and asked the forces of their countries to withdraw.

The Kyrgyz Presidency said in a statement: "The leaders of the two countries agreed to ask the relevant bodies for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of troops and equipment from the front line."

Yesterday, Russia renewed its call to the Kyrgyz and Tajik sides to take measures to prevent any provocations on the border between the two countries, indicating its readiness to help them solve border issues.
