Creepy find in front of Dietramszell monastery: construction workers dig up five skeletons

The bones were found at the beginning of August this year in the root area of the three old linden trees that had stood in front of the monastery until spring, Mayor Josef Hauser reported at the most recent municipal council meeting on Tuesday evening.

The archaeologist dr.

Jürgen Schreiber from Peiting (Weilheim-Schongau district), who is in charge of the investigations that have been initiated, assumes that the burials "definitely took place before the trees were planted".

Hauser therefore estimates her age to be at least 150 years old.

According to Schreiber, it is difficult to date more precisely because no grave goods such as rosaries or pilgrimage pendants were found.

"There are only a few bronze robe hooks and some coffin nails."

Bones are examined: skeletons could belong to an old cemetery

The anthropologist Dr.

Kristin von Heyking from Grafrath (district of Fürstenfeldbruck) examined the bones more closely.

“These are adults, male and female,” she explained when asked by our newspaper.

She did not discover any noticeable pathological changes in the bones.

The skeletons were buried in a stretched position in an east-west direction, so according to the expert these are Christian burials.

"They probably belonged to a former cemetery."

Because the human remains lay in two layers of earth, von Heyking assumes that the burials took place at some time later.

"Any remains of an old cemetery have probably been largely destroyed by the construction activities in recent decades," suspects Town Hall boss Hauser.

The monastery church was built in the 18th century - the forecourt is being redesigned

Today's monastery and parish church, in front of whose entrance the skeletons were found, was built at the beginning of the 18th century, the monastery itself has existed for over 900 years.

Over the centuries it has been repeatedly ravaged by fires and wars and has been rebuilt several times.

It has been owned by the Salesian nuns from Indersdorf (district of Dachau) since 1831.

The results of the anthropological and archaeological investigations may provide more information about when the five people were buried.

The community has not yet received them.

The redesign of the monastery forecourt does not affect the ongoing investigation.

After archaeologists recovered the five skeletons, construction work continued.

The village renewal measures in front of the church should be completed in autumn.
