Gmund – The DLRG Bayern gave an impressive look at their work at the water rescue day on Thursday on Lake Tegernsee.

There were also political celebrities like Markus Söder.

Capsized sailors, exhausted swimmers or water sports enthusiasts with health problems - in an emergency on the water, as on land, it has to be done quickly.

On Thursday (September 15) members of the DLRG Bayern impressively demonstrated how well they can do this on Lake Tegernsee.

The organization had invited to the day of water rescue - and many prominent politicians, above all Prime Minister Markus Söder, had come to Gmund for this.

Cuddles from the Prime Minister

Anyone who was out and about in the valley on Thursday afternoon should have been briefly shocked.

A police helicopter kept circling, emergency vehicles were on the move and speedboats from the police and DLRG made their rounds on Lake Tegernsee.

They were waiting for their assignments at the performance show of the German Life Saving Society.

After 2019, back then at Lake Chiemsee, this year again held a water rescue day.

In addition, the DLRG presented vehicles and equipment in the inner courtyard of Gut Kaltenbrunn, from transporters to inflatable boats and jet skis.

Rescue dog handlers with their trained four-legged friends were also happy about the visitors.

Prime Minister Söder also liked to stop by the rescue dogs and gave them a few cuddles.

Visited with him were Bavaria's Minister of the Interior Joachim Herrmann, President of the Landtag Ilse Aigner,

DLRG Bavaria.

The organization impressively demonstrated their commitment on the water.

The invited guests watched the demonstrations from on board the MS Tegernsee.

The politicians showed great respect and pledged their support.

The visit is also a sign of appreciation, said Söder.

Discussions about innovative training center for water rescue

"Thank you for the great work," said the Prime Minister in the direction of the DLRG members.

Söder praised "the enormous quality" and "the voluntary work" during the trip across Lake Tegernsee.

Week after week people had to be rescued.

In Germany, 199 people drowned in the first seven months of the year, 42 of them in Bavaria.

"We are a country of lakes," said Söder, who, as he said, loves to swim in the lake.

He is also a lifeguard and knows how much training is required for the rescue missions.

The water rescuers spend a lot of time on this, praised Söder.

Interior Minister Herrmann agreed and said the commitment of the volunteers was priceless.

The task of politics is to “create the best possible framework conditions”.

The Minister of the Interior confirmed his willingness

to establish an innovative training center for water rescue for basic and advanced training and regular exercises - analogous to the facility in Bad Tölz for the mountain rescue service.

The Ministry of the Interior is already in contact with the DLRG and the water rescue service.

"Let's work out a viable concept for such a center together," said Herrmann.

Exciting demonstrations on the Tegernsee

The politicians also pointed out how important it is for children to learn to swim and that this requires baths.

Swimming training is also a task of the DLRG, as is the water rescue service.

The members of the local branches in Gmund and Tegernsee showed how well they mastered it in several exercises.

Near Bad Wiessee, the volunteers recreated a collision between two boats, in which a capsized sailor was pulled out of the water by a police helicopter using a winch.

There was a deflagration on a raft with a gas grill in front of the Tegernsee lake promenade.

Three boats raced across the water to provide first aid to a seriously injured man, to rescue his friends from the water and to bring them to shore.

After the rescue exercises, the guests went back to Gut Kaltenbrunn, where Minister of the Interior Herrmann paid tribute to the services of the District Chairman of Upper Bavaria, Reinhardt Kutscher, and awarded him the DLRG plug-in cross.
