He is allowed to carry the plaque at the Oktoberfest parade: the Niederdorf innkeeper's son Leo Pfündl is looking forward to Sunday when the people of Oberilmtal march through Munich at the Oktoberfest costume parade.

He learned how to march from his older sisters, who are also there.

You will be seen on television all over the world on Sunday: the Oberilmtaler Jetzendorf Trachtenverein, the boys' band and the Dachau town band are taking part in the Oktoberfest parade.

The clubs have been preparing for weeks: for walking at a march.

District

– It will be the highlight of the anniversary year of the Oberilmtaler: The traditional costume association has already celebrated its 75th anniversary at several events this year – but this invitation to the pageant through the state capital is “a special honour”, says Chairman Hermann Edelmann.

The preparations for the traditional costume and riflemen's procession through Munich are largely complete.

Particularly good place

On Sunday morning, at 7.30 a.m., the Trachtlers board the S-Bahn in Petershausen in order to be on time for the start of the parade at 10 a.m. on Maximilianstrasse.

This year, the Jetzendorf Trachtler with train number 34 b have a particularly good place, the Unterschleißheim town band is marching in front of them and the historic Löwenbräu barrel wagon is behind them.

Around 60 of the 80 active members of the 289-member Trachtenverein from Jetzendorf march along the seven-kilometre route.

The Oktoberfest parade is nothing new for the Jetzendorfers, they were there in 2007 and 2015.

Arrived at the Wiesn, reserved places in the tent of the fisherman Vroni are already waiting for the Oberilmtaler.

Practiced marching with the sisters

Roswitha Glas, second chairwoman, reports that the parade participants prepare for the march in quite different ways.

Chairman and Vorplattler Hermann Edelmann keeps fit by cycling, and the youngest Oberilmtaler, nine-year-old Leo Pfündl from Niederdorf, has been practicing walking with his sisters for a few weeks.

He is even allowed to carry the badge of the Oberilmtal Trachtler.

Leo is now certain that the left foot must always be in front when the drum is played.

Roswitha Glas knows that "with such a huge parade, the euphoria also carries less experienced marchers, even if their feet make themselves felt after five hours".

As the youngest female participant in the Jetzendorfer camp, nine-year-old Emmi Mitrenga, who wears traditional costume with heart and soul, can be happy.

Ensign Roland Wildmoser, who wants to bring the club's symbol, the large flag, through the streets of Munich and show it in all its glory while swinging, has no easy task.

Boys' band provides table children

The Dachau boys' band is also part of the traditional costume and riflemen's procession.

"We are very happy," says Chairman Tilo Ederer.

The Dachauers have always had a good relationship with the organizers and also have a decisive advantage over the other brass bands: They also provide table children, i.e. boys and girls, who show the spectators along the seven-kilometer march which group will be marching next.

45 children and young people, many of them pupils from the boys' band, travel to Munich on Sunday morning in a Stadtwerke bus.

Dressing is at 8 a.m.

Then everyone is equipped with a loden cape and a hat.

The boys' band Dachau itself travels with a 60-man team: musicians, companions, sign bearers.

The challenging march "Greeting to Kiel" will be played this year, reveals Tilo Ederer.

After one and a half hours of continuous playing, the musicians are then allowed to "rest at the Wiesn".

Marching was rehearsed for countless hours in Dachau: on Sundays in the parking lots of Dachau supermarkets and when it rained in large underground car parks.

So the boys' band is ready for the Wiesn.

The past few weeks have also been marked by marching rehearsals in the town band, according to second chairman Christoph Hecken, who will lead the way on Sunday as conductor.

The musicians are very happy to be part of the costume parade again this year - after 2019 and 2017.

"We now just hope that it stays dry," said Hecken.

The 68 members of the town band meet at the Dachau train station.

"Music is already being made on the S-Bahn, which is great fun in advance," says Hecken.

And at least in the S-Bahn it's dry.
