Topic of the Ukraine war with Markus Lanz on ZDF: SPD man Ralf Stegner: Germany must lead the way with humanitarian aid.

No military solo efforts.

Hamburg – Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone.

Markus Lanz wants to know from Ralf Stegner what exactly was discussed.

But he has to wave it off: "I don't know that either.

But I know it's good to talk."

FDP politician Alexander Graf Lambsdorff also looked at the Kremlin's statement.

It is completely different from what Chancellor Scholz reported, he says.

"It's so far apart, it sounds like two different conversations." It seems to surprise the trained diplomat.

Which in turn surprises Stegner.

In such situations, propaganda is not surprising, but rather to be expected on both sides.

With which the “Markus Lanz” group is already where it will be for the next hour or so: with the Ukraine war and all its facets.

Lanz' next Ukraine debate: How is the situation on the battlefield?

Eastern Europe expert Liana Fix sees Ukraine's recent territorial conquests as proof of "how much we overestimate the Russian army".

The Ukrainian army has "constantly improved" since the beginning of the war.

Their advance shows "that it could be a turning point".

Lanz' guests now discuss all the details of the battlefields in the best general manner for almost seven minutes.

Whether there was a diversionary maneuver in northern Ukraine or not, whether the war will be decided in southern Ukraine or not.

Expert Fix seems to have very extensive information, at least from the Ukrainian side.

She therefore comes to the same conclusion as Ukraine: Germany must supply more weapons.

Lambsdorff even asks "if we don't support them, are we guilty?"

These guests discussed with Markus Lanz:

  • Liana Fix

(historian and political scientist, Russia and Eastern Europe expert)

  • Alexander Graf Lambsdorff

    (FDP faction vice)

  • Ralf Stegner

    (Member of the Bundestag, SPD)

  • Diana Zimmermann

    (ZDF journalist)

"Red Line": Lavrov spokeswoman warns USA against missile deliveries to Ukraine - and threatens nuclear reaction

Ralf Stegner is the only one this evening who advocates moderation.

As with "Hart aber Fair" last week in the same constellation with Lambsdorff, he shows himself in a diplomatic robe.

He has to defend himself again against all other guests - and this time against the moderator.

Lanz doesn't turn his heart into a murderer's den, he supports further arms deliveries to Ukraine.

He interrupts Stegner when he counters, but Stegner fires back.

That this war could only be ended with more weapons is only a hypothesis.

"I don't know of any tanks that save lives.

I only know of tanks that end lives.” Germany must “act in concert within the western alliance,” says Stegner.

"In military aid, we don't deserve the leadership role after what we've done over the last century."

Instead, the Germans should rather “set a good example.

With humanitarian, economic and financial aid”.

Stegner on "Lanz" on ZDF: "I'm not Sahra Wagenknecht and I'm not in the AfD either"

"I have great sympathy for this attitude," asserts Lanz, but still lays.

The consequence for Ukraine would then be: "Surrender, and then you're a Russian province." Stegner takes that as a personal hit.

"It's a caricature, you don't have to hold it against me," he snaps at Lanz.

"I'm not Sahra Wagenknecht and I'm also not in the AfD." Since those addressed are not invited to Lanz, he now has to defend the unloved political opponent shoulder to shoulder, whether he likes it or not.

And Lanz does not give up: "Without this arms delivery, the Ukraine would long since have been a Russian province," he warns Stegner.

He remains calm: the public debate is always about weapons.

He calls back the old culture of debate: One should probably "discuss that there are different ways to peace," he says.

Lance tries again.

"Guns don't end wars?

I would clearly disagree with that.” Stegner makes it clear: “Dear Mr. Lanz, I am not a pacifist.

But we can easily discuss it in the warm studio chair.” Lambsdorff seems downright forgiving.

He praises Scholz for talking to Putin.

Liana Fix interjects again: Russia is "not such a successful military power" as people always think.

The country was just "lucky".

Her thesis: "The myth of Russian superiority has been debunked." "Science can look at it coolly," Stegner whistles back, but "diplomacy always has the task of de-escalation."

A notable clip shows a talk show from Russian television.

One hears different opinions, even criticism of the Kremlin.

Everything is very amazing, the group at Lanz agrees.

Lambsdorff is surprised that there of all things there was a certain balance and not a majority of guests who "bash" at someone who thinks differently.

Lanz actually seems to feel caught: "I'm just trying to interpret Mr. Stegner's face."

Conclusion of the talk with Markus Lanz:

Lanz left his moderator role and became a fellow discussant.

Surprisingly, the majority of his guests shared his own opinion.

As if to cushion this, Lanz began this program with a completely different topic: the live broadcast to London on the occasion of the Queen's death seemed like a foreign body.

The unsurprising finding: Younger Britons can no longer do much with the monarchy.

More interesting: Lanz still calls the king "Prince Charles".
