On Tuesday afternoon, a tragic accident occurred in the Zugspitze area, more precisely in the "Iron Age" alpine climbing route.
The 62-year-old man from the Bergisch Gladbach area was on his way to the summit of the Zugspitze with his 55-year-old companion from the Cologne area.
To do this, they climbed into the "Iron Age" alpine route, which leads below the cable car through the north face of the Zugspitze.
In the upper part of the tour, the 62-year-old slipped for unknown reasons,
as he searched for directions and fell about 20 to 30 meters down steep, rocky terrain.
The mountaineer who had an accident, who was a skilled climber and experienced alpinist, died at the crash site.
The companion was brought down unharmed by the rescue helicopter.
The Grainau mountain rescue service was initially deployed with the support of the rescue helicopter from Murnau.
For the subsequent rescue, the Alpine police task force and police helicopter were called in.
