A 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked the coasts of southeastern Taiwan and northeastern Japan today, and Japanese authorities warned of a tsunami threat.
Media quoted meteorologists as saying that in Japan's Miyagi Prefecture, near the coast where the quake's epicenter is located, the tsunami could reach a height of one meter.
Experts added that at the moment there is no information about whether the tsunami has reached Miyagi shores and they have warned coastal residents of the danger of approaching the coast.
According to the estimates of Chinese seismologists, the quake measured 6.9 degrees, and its epicenter was in Hualien County on the east coast of the island of Taiwan.
According to information issued by the Japanese authorities, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 60 kilometers under the ocean floor, while the Japanese government set up an emergency operations room in anticipation of any emergency.
On the other hand, Japan's Kyodo Agency said that the earthquake did not lead to emergency situations in the nuclear facilities located in that region.
