The US meteorologist warned of a rare storm that hit western Alaska, causing huge waves and flooding that swept away homes.
"The remnants of Hurricane Merbuck hit western Alaska... over the weekend with strong waves and hurricane-force winds," the meteorologist said, adding that "the floods will increase in intensity."
"This is without a doubt the strongest storm we've seen in early fall in the Bering Sea in the last 50 years," said University of Alaska climate expert Rick Thoman.
Municipal services in Fairbanks, Alaska's second largest city, said: In the coastal village of Golovin, "the school is surrounded by water, homes have overflowed and at least two homes are floating." CNN posted a video clip showing a house floating on a river before being stuck under a bridge.
Winds of up to 145 km/h were recorded, according to the US Meteorological Service, which expects other stronger winds to blow.
