Taiwan suffered 47 aftershocks as of this morning, one of them measuring 5.3, after a strong earthquake of 6.6 magnitude hit Taitung County, east of the island, yesterday evening.

According to Xinhua, the aftershocks have led to some accidents, such as wall collapses, power outages, water pipe explosions, roof collapses, etc., but no casualties or serious disasters have been reported so far.

The Taiwan Meteorological Agency said the 6.6-magnitude quake yesterday was the strongest earthquake in the epicenter over the past 49 years, as it struck at not much depth from the earth's surface and thus was felt by people all over the island.

Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates in the South China Sea and is prone to earthquakes, with more than 100 people killed in a devastating earthquake in the south of the island in 2016.
