Prime Minister Yair Lapid is expected to meet in New York with King Abdullah of Jordan, according to two senior Israeli officials.

This will be the second meeting between Lapid and the King since Lapid assumed the position of Prime Minister and the fourth meeting between them since the establishment of the government in June 2021. The officials said that talks are underway to hold the meeting on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN Assembly, but the date has not yet been finalized.

why is it important

The meeting between Lapid and the King will take place a few days before Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' speech at the United Nations. In Israel, they are concerned that Abbas's speech will be extremely harsh and will further increase tensions in the field. In recent weeks, Israel has been working with Jordan to pressure Abbas to activate the Palestinian security forces in the north the West Bank and curb the escalation.

The meeting will take place before the Tishrei holidays, during which there is a potential for tensions on the Temple Mount - an issue that greatly worries the Jordanians. In recent weeks, the Jordanians pressured Palestinian President Abbas not to advance a vote in the UN Security Council to accept Palestine as a full member state of the UN.

A meeting with Erdogan as well

Lapid is also expected to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York - the Prime Minister's Office confirmed last night. The expected meeting, which was first reported in Walla, will be Erdogan's first meeting with an Israeli prime minister since His meeting with Ehud Olmert in Ankara in December 2008.

About a month ago, Israel and Turkey announced the normalization of relations between them and the return of the level of diplomatic relations to the highest level and the appointment of ambassadors and consuls general after over four years in which the level of relations was low. Shortly before the announcement, Israel and Turkey finally signed an aviation agreement that would allow The resumption of Israeli airlines' flights to Turkey after many years in which the flights between the countries were only operated by Turkish airlines.

Lapid and Erdogan spoke twice on the phone in the last two months.

The first conversation took place immediately after Lapid was sworn in as Prime Minister and the second conversation took place after the announcement of the normalization of relations.

The one who led the process of normalizing relations between the countries was President Herzog in coordination with Lapid and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

In March, Herzog visited Ankara and met with Erdogan.
