The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the statements of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about what she described as the deadly attacks against Armenia, stressing that these statements are baseless and have political goals and increase tensions in the region.

The ministry also expressed, in a statement carried by Sputnik Agency today, its regret over Pelosi’s statements, explaining that her accusations are false, unfair, not acceptable, and politically motivated, in light of the approaching midterm elections for “Congress” in the United States and her attempt to woo the Armenian lobby there.

The ministry explained that Pelosi's speech during her visit to Yerevan represents a serious blow to efforts to normalize relations between the two sides, warning that these statements do not contribute to strengthening the fragile peace in the region, but rather increase tensions between the two countries.

Earlier today, Pelosi said during a press conference in the Armenian capital Yerevan: On behalf of the Congress, I condemn the deadly attacks by Azerbaijan on Armenia and that the United States has always stated that there is no military solution to the conflict.

Clashes erupted last Tuesday on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, and the two sides exchanged accusations against each other over the start of the escalation.
