The storms and strong winds caused this Sunday by Hurricane Fiona, category 1, have already caused a massive blackout in Puerto Rico.

executive director of the Electric Power Authority, the failure was reported from 1:00 pm (local time) and was caused by the fact that the system "was completely turned off."

The authorities activated the protocols to restore power, according to the local newspaper, and the operations will begin in the north of the island.

"We are in coordination with the Energy Control Center (operated by the LUMA company). We are already turning on," Colón added to Nuevo Día.

Governor Pedro Pierluisi confirmed the reports of energy loss and assured that he is working with suppliers to assist Puerto Ricans.

Fiona became a category one hurricane on Sunday morning, threatening Puerto Rico with rain and winds of up to 80 miles per hour.

At the time of reporting the widespread blackout, hundreds of customers had already reported the power outage in their homes.
