Flensburg - In the mayoral election in Flensburg on Sunday, none of the four candidates received the required majority.

There will be a run-off election between incumbent Simone Lange and non-party Fabian Geyer on October 2nd.

Geyer, supported by the CDU and FDP, among others, got 43.5 percent of the votes cast.

36.2 percent voted for Lange, which is supported by the SPD and the Greens.

Geyer is the managing director of the Flensburg-Schleswig-Eckernförde employers' association.

The journalist Karin Haug stood for the party of the Danish and Frisian minority (SSW).

She got 16.3 percent of the votes cast.

Marc Paysen ("Flensburg vote") got 4.0 percent.

Around 77,200 residents of the city were called to vote.

Voter turnout was higher than in 2016. At that time, only 31.0 percent of those eligible to vote took part in the polls.

This year it was 36.9 percent.

Six years ago, Lange won the absolute majority in the first ballot and replaced Simon Faber from the SSW in the executive chair in the town hall.
