The Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, presented, during his meeting today with the Special Representative of the United Nations General Secretariat on Violence against Children, Najat Mualla Majid, the Ministry's measures in cooperation with the relevant ministries in the field of child protection.

During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the activities of the Education Transformation Summit currently being held in New York, Minister Tabbaa pointed to the need to work on implementing a comprehensive national campaign in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund “UNICEF” to reduce all forms of physical and psychological violence, indicating that most children in school were born or lived During the terrorist war on Syria, the Ministry has been working in cooperation with the relevant ministries and international organizations to reduce the phenomenon of school violence for more than a year.

Tabbaa pointed to the awareness campaigns that were implemented with various ministries and institutions to raise awareness of the importance of combating violence and mitigating its effects, indicating that the ministry conducted a study to analyze the phenomenon of school and community violence through reports prepared by specialists in psychological and social counseling in schools. It also conducted a competition for youth and adolescents, during which 175 creative works were selected. Of these, 36 works, the owners of which participated in the creative workshop that was carried out last week in Damascus.

Tabbaa indicated that a media campaign will be launched to reduce school violence during the next month, in coordination with UNICEF, indicating the negative effects of the terrorist war on the new generation and the reflection of economic sanctions, which requires concerted efforts to limit the effects of this, explaining that educational curricula have been included. With the necessary life skills to build the personality of children and students, and evidence of social and emotional education to achieve the protection of children and secure education and education for them, because this is one of the priorities of the educational policy in Syria, with an emphasis on the right to education for every Syrian child wherever he is.

The minister indicated that the relationship with international organizations is very good, as they provide support to rehabilitate schools, secure the requirements of the educational process, build the capacities of workers, and support students studying in the category “B” curriculum.

In turn, the Special Representative of the United Nations General Secretariat affirmed the desire to support the efforts of the Ministry of Education in protecting children from violence and mitigating the effects of war by providing a safe and stimulating educational environment for study, as it will coordinate with UNICEF and other international organizations to support the Ministry's efforts in this context.

Majid stressed the possibility of full support to face the challenges facing children's education in Syria, expressing her admiration for what the Syrian government, represented by the Ministry of Education, is doing in the field of continuing education and maintaining its quality.

The meeting was attended by the Director of Planning and International Cooperation in the Ministry, Ghassan Shgari, and Cecilia Anicama from the Special Office at the United Nations.
