Opinion Why did I go to the equality march? Israel today

2022-09-18T22:13:53.421Z

This evening, a march left Beer Sheva and Makariat Shmona, from Kfar Giladi to Jerusalem, whose goal is to promote equal opportunities for the periphery compared to the center • This is a real and necessary agenda

Political cynicism has become part of the Israeli identity in recent years.

The broken political system pushes us there.

Therefore, when leaders from the periphery go on the "equality march" from Beer Sheva and Kiryat Shmona, from Kfar Giladi to Jerusalem, in order to promote equal opportunities for the periphery vis-à-vis the center, we are asked why this time we think it will have an effect.

The real answer is: we don't really know.

Influence and revolution do not come by invitation.

What is certain is that they do not happen by themselves.

The month of Elul is a month of "Open for me a door like the opening of a needle and I will open for you the door of a world" (Song of Songs Rabbah).

It is not like someone who knocks on the walls of opacity a hundred times or a hundred and one.

In the end, persistence breaks down walls.

Why do we still believe that this time the march will change?

Because she is right.

There is truth in the world.

She does not submit to the logic of Bibi-no-Bibi, and puts a real and necessary agenda on the public and political agenda.

Because it was built by an extraordinary coalition of organizations.

The major youth movements, the national student union, organizations from the traditional eastern side, from the Arab and Bedouin society, the kibbutz movement and more.

It is an innovative coalition that aims to work for the long term.

The week of the Equality March is very important, but it is only a stop on the way.

This coalition sets goals, the appeal is to the contending parties.

I saw that at least one of them flaunts the crown of the "Social Party of Israel".

Rather.

Every party that considers itself social is tested with a simple commitment test: adopting the document of goals concerning health, education, welfare, housing, employment and transportation;

and bringing these commitments to the coalition negotiations and the next state budget.

Because this march was built by women and men, Jews and Arabs, Mizrahim and Ashkenazim, those who live in the geographic and social peripheries and those in the center.

There are no reception committees for the march, and anyone who comes will be able to march with us.

This is not a show of individuals and not another election campaign to be chewed and marketed to the tired.

This is a broad and diverse group determined to reform Israeli society.

bring about a real transformation.

The huge gap between the periphery and the center from the age of zero (about 90% of toddlers in the upper class in the frameworks, compared to less than 50% in the lower class), between school ages (gaps of 20 times or more in excellent matriculation rates) and among workers (double average salary in the center) continues until the end of our lives.

The chance of those born in the periphery to change their lives for the better is 13% compared to 32% for those born in the center.

And to fix it, against the current busy with a million other things, we must stimulate and push with all our might.

Cynicism must be left out.

Those who are invited to be part of the Equality March are those whose hope has not yet been lost.

Who understand that as soon as despair takes over and we give up, we are part of the decline of Israeli society.

We can go fast alone, but if we want to go far - we have to together.

were we wrong

We will fix it!
