A stroke results in a cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage.

Eating habits can protect you from the former.

A stroke can have serious health consequences.

In some cases it even ends fatally.

More than 200,000 people in Germany suffer a stroke every year, although this can be announced ten years in advance with warning signs.

However, the risk can be reduced with a healthy diet.

There are some foods that naturally clean the arteries and improve blood circulation.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), stroke is the third leading cause of death in Germany.

It is all the more important to prevent the disease and reduce the risk.

This can be done on the one hand through diet and on the other hand by avoiding the following five risk factors for a stroke:

  • High cholesterol levels

  • high blood pressure

  • diabetes mellitus

  • sedentary lifestyle and obesity

  • Smoking

Preventing a stroke: Study examines the connection between illness and eating habits

It has been proven that certain diets can alleviate the symptoms of some ailments or even prevent the diseases entirely - this is also the case with strokes.

This is shown by the results of a study published in the

European Heart Journal

.

The scientists examined the connection between the risk of a stroke and the eating habits of the participants.

To do this, they observed the behavior of around 420,000 people from nine European countries over several decades.

The researchers differentiated between an ischemic and a hemorrhagic stroke.

Ischemic attacks are also known as "cerebral infarction" and occur in four out of five strokes.

In these cases, a blood vessel supplying the brain narrows or occludes, which means that an area of the brain is undersupplied with nutrients and oxygen.

However, 20 percent of all strokes are hemorrhagic strokes.

The bursting of a blood vessel causes a cerebral hemorrhage and thus an undersupply of the brain tissue behind it.

Analysis of the data showed that red and processed meat appears to have a negative impact on the risk of ischemic stroke.

Egg consumption, on the other hand, increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

However, the most common type of stroke, the ischemic attack, can be prevented with certain foods.

Preventing Stroke: Five Foods Clean Arteries

Red meat does increase the risk of ischemic stroke.

However, the resulting negative effect can be offset by a healthy diet.

A whole grain diet, for example, plays an important role.

The following foods therefore have a positive effect on the risk of stroke:

  • whole grain products

  • vegetables

  • fruit

  • nuts and seeds

  • cheese and dairy products

According to the researchers of the study, the effects of diets come about through the effects of foods on blood lipid levels and blood pressure.

According to Prof. Hans-Christoph Diener, spokesman for the German Society for Neurology, dietary factors do not appear to have a protective effect on the risk of cerebral hemorrhage, but eggs do increase the risk of a stroke.
