A sinkhole opens in Ayalon lanes (Walla system!)

The sinkhole that opened yesterday (Saturday) in Ayalon lanes, near Migdal Azrieli, resulted in heavy traffic congestion and the hermetically closing of Ayalon South from Gilolit to HaShalom Interchange during the night.

However, it seems that the event, which most of us see as an exception, is not a rare phenomenon and in a city that is being excavated non-stop - we are expected to see more events of this type in the coming years.

According to a preliminary assessment by the Ayalon Routes Company, the hole was created as a result of the construction work on the Spiral Tower, the fourth tower of the Azrieli Company.

Officials at the Ayalon Roads Company estimate that the sinkhole was created as a result of drilling carried out at the construction site of the Azrieli Towers, which caused the water below the ground to flow towards the road and open the hole.

We will see more such events soon.

In similar cases in the past of the collapse of roads and infrastructure following the formation of sinkholes in urban environments, the causes were often works carried out nearby.

These cause a change in the flow of groundwater that sweeps the ground under the infrastructure and actually creates an underground space into which the road courses.

A little over a year ago, part of the Shaare Zedek Hospital parking lot in Jerusalem collapsed.

There, too, the estimates were that the collapse was related to the tunnel of Highway 16 that was dug under it.

In other cases, such as the one that happened in Tel Aviv in November 2021, the reason why the sinkhole opened was an explosion in a sewer pipe, which caused water to seep into the ground, a drift of the soft soil under the asphalt - and finally its collapse.

There, too, this is not a rare event and in a city that will be excavated quite a bit in the coming years with projects such as the light rail and the metro, alongside a construction boom - these are phenomena we expect to see more of.

The reasons - works carried out nearby.

The sinkhole in the Ayalon lanes opened hours before Shabbat, on two lanes at the HaShalom interchange heading south.

The police and fire brigade blocked the road, and no injuries were reported in the incident.

The blockade is expected throughout the night, and in the morning a decision will be made according to the developments.

The Azrieli Group stated that "the case is under investigation. Professionals on our behalf and on behalf of the operating company, Solel Bona, are working and are in continuous contact with Ayalon routes on the matter."
